14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
Thorny soil looks promising. The seed really does grow. But it has competition—thorns. Jesus says these thorns are “cares and riches and pleasures of this life.” They don’t always look evil; many are normal things: work, finances, hobbies, family responsibilities. But when they become our priority, they choke out God’s Word.
Worry keeps us tethered to this world instead of trusting God. The love of riches convinces us that money, not God, is our security. The pursuit of pleasure slowly pushes obedience and service to the edges of our lives. The result? “No fruit to perfection”—no mature fruit. A life that started well, but remained spiritually small and barren.
The Bible does not condemn having things; it condemns letting things have us. A responsive heart wages war on the “weeds” that choke the Word. Like a good gardener, we must love the flowers (what God is growing) and hate the weeds (anything that suffocates our devotion).
Father, search my heart for thorns. Show me where worry, greed, or selfish pleasure is choking out Your Word and my fruitfulness. I surrender my priorities to You. Help me to seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness, trusting that You will take care of what I need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Identify one “thorn” that is stealing time or focus from God (an activity, habit, unnecessary screen time, etc.). Today, reduce or remove it for at least one day, and use that time instead for prayer, Bible reading, or serving someone else.
