Scripture Reading: John 4:10
Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
“If thou knewest the gift of God…”
Those words are full of longing. Jesus is basically saying, “If you only knew who I am and what I’m offering, you would be begging Me for it.”
This woman came to the well to draw ordinary water—water that would satisfy for a moment and then leave her thirsty again. Her whole life was a picture of that cycle: relationship after relationship, searching for satisfaction and always coming up empty.
Jesus points her to a different kind of water—living water, eternal life, the indwelling Holy Spirit who satisfies the deepest thirst of the soul. That is “the gift of God.”
How many people sit in church, walk through life, and even call themselves Christian, but live as if they do not truly know “the gift of God”? If we really grasped the value of salvation—complete forgiveness, God’s presence within, eternal life, adoption as God’s children—we would run to Jesus daily. We would ask much more. We would expect much more.
If you have never trusted Christ, this gift is offered freely to you—paid for by His blood, received by repentance and faith. If you are saved, your greatest satisfaction is not out in the world; it is in knowing, loving, and walking with the One who lives within you.
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for the gift of God—eternal life through You. Forgive me for seeking satisfaction in the world’s wells instead of in You. Open my eyes afresh to the greatness of my salvation. Deepen my hunger for Your presence and my appreciation for the living water You give.
In Your name, Amen.
Write down three specific blessings that come with salvation (e.g., forgiveness, God’s presence, eternal life). Thank God for each one specifically in prayer. If you have never trusted Christ, take time today to honestly ask Him to save you and give you this living water.
