Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 16:10–12 (KJV)
“Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.
And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.”
Devotional
In the sermon, we heard about Gideon, “the least” in his family, and David, the overlooked shepherd boy whom even his own father did not bother to bring before Samuel. Yet God passed over the impressive older brothers and chose the one everyone else ignored.
The same pattern appears in Exodus 2. Moses’ father is from the tribe of Levi—a tribe not yet prominent, not yet priestly, and humanly insignificant. But God’s providential hand rests where humans see little value.
God delights to use what the world considers small, weak, or unimportant, so that His power is clearly seen. Perhaps you feel like David—“just a shepherd,” or like Gideon—“the least in my father’s house,” or like an unnoticed believer in a small church. Others might underestimate you; you might underestimate yourself. But God sees differently.
The question from the sermon lingers: What is God looking at you for that everyone else says you’re not worthy of? God’s providential hand may already be on you for tasks you cannot yet imagine.
Reflection
Prayer
Lord,
You chose David when his own family did not see his worth. You chose Gideon in his weakness. You chose Moses from a slave family. Help me to believe that You can use me, despite my limitations and others’ opinions. Show me the work You have for me “for such a time as this,” and give me faith to obey. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Action
Identify one area where you’ve believed, “God can’t use me there.” Write that down, then beside it write a promise such as 1 Corinthians 1:27–29 or Philippians 4:13. Pray over that area and ask God specifically to use you in it this week, even in a small way.
