Devotional

Many believers feel “burned out,” tired, or fearful when it comes to serving God. But Scripture tells us to “be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” Strength for service does not come from personality, energy level, or talent. It comes from grace.

Hebrews 12:28 says, “let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.” Apart from grace, our worship is empty and our service is weak. With grace, our simple obedience becomes acceptable to God. Grace keeps us from pride (“look what I’m doing for God”) and from despair (“I can’t do anything for God”). It keeps the focus on Him.

Paul, who called himself “less than the least of all saints,” saw his ministry as a gift of grace: “Unto me… is this grace given, that I should preach…” In other words, service itself is a gift. It’s not a burden to be endured, but a privilege given by a gracious God.

Philippians 4:13 is often quoted, but notice the source: “through Christ which strengtheneth me.” The same Christ who saved you by grace will strengthen you by grace to do whatever He calls you to do—whether that’s preaching, parenting, sharing the gospel with a co-worker, or quietly serving behind the scenes at church.

Grace not only forgives you; it sends you. It strengthens you to reach others with the same good news that changed your life.

Reflection

  • Have I viewed serving God more as a burden or as a grace-given privilege?
  • Where is God prompting me to step out in faith to serve or to share Christ, but I have held back out of fear, fatigue, or feelings of inadequacy?

Prayer

Lord, I thank Thee that Thou hast called me to serve Thee, not in my own strength, but in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. Forgive me for complaining, quitting, or shrinking back from what Thou hast asked me to do. Fill me with Thy grace, that I may serve Thee acceptably with reverence and godly fear. Strengthen me through Christ to do all that Thou hast appointed for me today. Use me to reach others with the unsearchable riches of Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Action

Take one concrete step of service or witness today that you have been putting off (call someone who needs encouragement, volunteer at church, share your testimony with a friend, invite someone to church, etc.). Before you act, deliberately pray, “Lord, I will do this in Your grace and strength, not my own.”
