2 Corinthians 8:9
9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
Philippians 4:19
19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
According to the world, you are rich if you have money, status, and things. According to God, you are rich if you have Christ. Jesus was rich from all eternity: worshipped by angels, possessing all power and glory. Yet, for your sake, He became poor. He entered this broken world, took on human flesh, and went to the cross. Why? “That ye through his poverty might be rich.”
If you belong to Christ, you possess more than this world can count: forgiveness, peace with God, the Holy Spirit dwelling in you, a spiritual family, and an eternal home in heaven. You have promises that cannot be taken by inflation, thieves, sickness, or death.
Many Christians live as if they are spiritually poor—complaining, comparing, and constantly feeling shortchanged. But in Christ, you can say with Paul, “as having nothing, and yet possessing all things” (2 Corinthians 6:10). When you truly see your riches in Christ, generosity and trust become possible, even in lean times.
Grace doesn’t always give you more stuff; grace teaches you to see that in Jesus, you already have more than enough.
Lord Jesus, I thank Thee that though Thou wast rich, yet for my sake Thou becamest poor, that through Thy poverty I might be rich. Forgive me for grumbling and comparing myself to others. Open my eyes to see the riches I have in Thee. Teach me to trust that my God shall supply all my need according to His riches in glory. Make me generous and content, knowing that all I truly need is Thee. In Thy name I pray, Amen.
List five spiritual blessings you have right now in Christ (e.g., salvation, answered prayers, Christian friends, peace, etc.). Then, today, intentionally bless someone materially or with your time—an act of generosity flowing from the riches you have in Jesus.
