Romans 5:20–21
20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 6:14
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
1 John 1:9
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Sin is powerful. It ruins lives, homes, churches, and testimonies. Left to ourselves, we are no match for it. But we are not left to ourselves. “Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.”
Grace does not excuse sin; it overcomes it. Grace is God’s power and favor working where we could never help ourselves. Under the law, we see how far short we fall. Under grace, we see how far Christ has reached down to pull us out.
Romans 6:14 makes a staggering statement: “Sin shall not have dominion over you.” That means sin is no longer your master. Grace is now on the throne. When we say, “I just can’t help it; that’s just the way I am,” we are talking like people who are still under sin’s rule. But in Christ, that’s no longer true.
You may still struggle, you may still fail, but the story has changed. Grace destroys the authority of sin. Through confession and repentance, God does not only forgive; He cleanses and restores. He breaks chains we thought were permanent.
Father, I come to Thee in the name of Jesus Christ. Thou knowest the sins that so easily beset me. I confess them before Thee. According to Thy Word, be faithful and just to forgive and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Help me to believe that sin no longer has dominion over me, for I am not under the law, but under grace. Strengthen me by Thy Spirit to walk in victory, not in defeat. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Identify one specific area of sin you battle. Confess it honestly to God. Then share that specific struggle with a trusted, mature believer and ask them to pray with you and hold you accountable this week, believing that God’s grace can and will break sin’s dominion.
