Scripture Reading – 1 John 5:13 (KJV)
“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”

Devotional
The sermon emphasized the need to be fully assured—especially about salvation. You cannot live the Christian life on purpose if you are constantly wondering, “Am I really saved?” An unsure heart is a paralyzed heart. You won’t witness boldly, pray confidently, or serve joyfully if you’re not certain you belong to Christ.

John tells us plainly: God wants you to know you have eternal life—not just hope, guess, or wish. Assurance isn’t arrogance; it’s faith in God’s promise. If you believe on the name of the Son of God—trusting Christ alone, not your works—then God says you have eternal life.

Along with assurance of salvation, you need assurance of God’s love. Romans 5:8 declares that “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” He did not wait for you to clean yourself up. He died for you at your worst. That means you are not worthless, no matter what your past, your feelings, or other people may say. The cross is God’s declaration that you are loved and valued.

When you are certain of your salvation and God’s love, you can face life’s battles with confidence. You can say to the enemy, “You can’t have me. I belong to Jesus.”

Reflection

  • If someone asked, “Are you saved?” would you answer with hesitation or with certainty? Why?
  • On what are you basing your assurance—your feelings and performance, or the finished work and promises of Christ?

Prayer
“Lord, thank You that You want me to know that I have eternal life. I confess that at times I’ve doubted and looked more at myself than at Your Word. Today I place my trust in Jesus Christ alone—His death and resurrection for my sins. Thank You that Your promises are sure, even when my feelings are weak. Flood my heart with the assurance of Your love and salvation, so I can serve You boldly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Action
Write out 1 John 5:13 and Romans 5:8 on a card or in your phone. Read them out loud three times today—morning, midday, and night. Each time, thank God specifically that (1) you can know you have eternal life and (2) Christ loved you at your worst. If you still have serious doubts about your salvation, set aside time today to talk with a mature believer or pastor.
