Scripture Reading (KJV)
Matthew 6:31–33
“Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Devotional
In the sermon, the preacher warned against twisting verses like Romans 8:32 into a “prosperity gospel” that promises Cadillacs and riches if you just do the right religious things. That is not what God promised.

God promised to meet your needs, not indulge every want. Jesus taught that your Father already knows what you need before you ask—food, clothing, daily provision. The condition isn’t “seek things first,” but “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness.” When God’s kingdom and God’s will are first in your heart, your daily needs fall into place under His faithful care.

The preacher put it plainly: some people are seeking their own way and then ask, “Why don’t I have?” The problem is not that God is unfaithful, but that they are outside His will. True prosperity is not living in luxury; it is living under God’s reign—with a supplied table, a guided life, and a heart at peace because your Father has you.

As his grandfather said, “When you realize that Jesus is all you have, you’ll realize Jesus is all you need.”

Reflection

  • Am I seeking God first, or am I seeking things first and then asking God to bless them?
  • Where do I confuse my wants with my needs?

Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Forgive me for worrying about my needs and chasing after things as if I have no Father in heaven. Teach me to seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness. Help me to trust that as I put You first, You will add all that I truly need. Correct my desires where they are selfish or worldly, and align my heart with Yours. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Action
Identify one “want” that has been consuming your thoughts (a purchase, status, comfort). Today, choose to lay it down before God and instead focus on seeking Him—spend extra time in prayer or Bible reading in the time you would normally spend thinking about or pursuing that want.
