Scripture Reading: John 4:16–18, 28–30
Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
To give this woman living water, Jesus first put His finger on the wound: her sin and her shame. “Go, call thy husband.” He already knew the truth: five husbands, and now living with a man not her husband.
Jesus did not expose her to crush her but to free her. He wanted her to know that He saw it all—every failure, every secret—and was still offering her living water. Real satisfaction requires real repentance. You cannot cling to your sin and be filled with Christ at the same time.
Remarkably, the very area of her deepest shame became her testimony: “Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did.” She doesn’t hide anymore. She leaves her waterpot—symbol of her old routine and old thirst—and runs to tell others about Jesus. The woman who came alone to the well to avoid people now runs toward people to bring them to Christ.
When Jesus exposes our sin, it’s an invitation, not a condemnation. He calls us to bring our brokenness into the light so He can cleanse, heal, and use us. The things that once defined us in shame can become testimonies of His grace.
Lord Jesus,
You see everything in me—every sin, every secret, every failure. I confess that I have tried to hide certain areas from You and from others. Today I bring them into Your light. Please forgive me, cleanse me, and change me. Use even my failures as a testimony to Your grace, just as You did with the woman at the well.
In Your name, Amen.
