Scripture Reading: Matthew 12:34-35 (KJV)
“O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.”
Devotional
What is inside of us eventually comes out. We may hide an attitude for a while, but pressure reveals the heart. When life becomes difficult, when someone offends us, when plans fall apart, our words and reactions often show what has been living inside.
Jesus said the mouth speaks from the abundance of the heart. That means our words matter because they reveal more than a momentary feeling. They reveal what we are allowing to grow within us.
A Christlike heart produces Christlike speech. A humble heart speaks with grace. A forgiving heart speaks with mercy. A surrendered heart asks God for wisdom before reacting in anger.
If we want our words to change, we must let God change our hearts.
Reflection
What have your recent words revealed about your heart?
Prayer
Lord, search my heart. Show me anything that does not please You. Forgive me for careless, harsh, bitter, or faithless words. Fill my heart with Your love, truth, and grace so that my mouth will honor You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Action
Make a commitment today to speak words that build up. If you say something wrong, quickly confess it to God and make it right with the person if needed.
