“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick;
and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works,
and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
A thermometer simply reflects the temperature around it. A thermostat changes the environment.
Many Christians live like spiritual thermometers. If the world is angry, they become angry. If the culture is fearful, they become fearful. If everyone around them is negative, they become negative too. Their minds and attitudes are controlled by the environment around them.
But God calls His people to be different. Jesus said we are the light of the world. Light does not merely reflect darkness; it overcomes it.
A renewed mind allows a believer to influence instead of simply being influenced. When Christ controls your thoughts, He begins to control your reactions, your words, your attitude, and your witness.
You cannot change the whole world in one day, but you can let Christ change the atmosphere around you. In your home, workplace, church, and conversations, you can reflect the light of Jesus.
Are you mostly being shaped by the people and culture around you, or are you allowing Christ to use you to make a difference?
Lord, help me not to simply reflect the world around me. Make me a light for Your glory. Renew my mind so that my words, attitude, and actions point others to You. Amen.
