“While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.”
In Acts 24, Felix trembled under conviction. But beside him was Drusilla. She heard the same preaching. She was present for the same truth. Yet Scripture does not say she trembled. It does not say she was moved.
That is a sobering thing.
It is possible to hear truth so often and reject it so repeatedly that the heart becomes hard. A person can sit under preaching, hear Scripture, know the truth, and still remain unmoved.
A hard heart does not usually happen overnight. It forms one “no” at a time. One ignored conviction. One postponed decision. One compromise excused. One sin defended. Eventually, the voice of God that once stirred the soul may seem distant.
This should concern both the lost and the saved. The lost person must not ignore the Holy Spirit’s call to salvation. The Christian must not ignore God’s correction, conviction, and call to holiness.
A tender heart is one of the greatest blessings a person can have.
When was the last time God’s Word moved you? Are you quick to repent, or have you grown used to saying “no” to God?
Father, keep my heart tender before You. Do not let me become cold, careless, or unmoved by Your Word. Break up the hardness in me. Give me a heart that trembles at Your truth and gladly obeys Your voice. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Read Psalm 139:23-24 today and pray it sincerely. Ask God to reveal any hardness, bitterness, sin, or resistance in your heart.
