“And the priest shall put on his linen garment, and his linen breeches shall he put upon his flesh, and take up the ashes which the fire hath consumed with the burnt offering on the altar, and he shall put them beside the altar.
And he shall put off his garments, and put on other garments, and carry forth the ashes without the camp unto a clean place.”
Devotional
Before the fire could continue burning properly, the priest had to deal with the ashes. Yesterday’s sacrifice left behind residue. The altar had to be tended. The ashes had to be removed. The place of worship had to be kept ready.
There is a powerful spiritual picture here.
Many believers are asking God for fresh fire while their hearts are still full of yesterday’s ashes. Old bitterness. Unconfessed sin. Spiritual laziness. Pride. Distraction. Worldliness. A cold attitude. A critical spirit.
Ashes are evidence that there once was fire—but ashes are not the same as fire.
It is possible to talk about what God used to do in your life while neglecting what He wants to do now. It is possible to remember past blessings but have no present flame.
God wants to rekindle His fire in us, but we must let Him clean the altar of our hearts.
Reflection
Consider what “ashes” may need to be removed from your life:
- Is there sin you need to confess?
- Is there someone you need to forgive?
- Are you living on past spiritual experiences instead of walking with God today?
- Has your heart grown cold toward prayer, worship, or Scripture?
God does not desire a dirty altar. He desires a surrendered heart.
Prayer
Lord, search my heart. Show me the ashes that need to be removed. Cleanse me from sin, pride, bitterness, and anything that hinders Your work in my life. I do not want to live on memories of old fire. I want fresh fire from You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Action
Spend at least 10 quiet minutes today asking God to reveal anything that is hindering your walk with Him. Write it down, confess it, and surrender it to Him.
