Scripture Reading: Leviticus 6:12-13 (KJV)
“And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it; it shall not be put out: and the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order upon it; and he shall burn thereon the fat of the peace offerings.
The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.”
Devotional
God sent the fire, but the priests were responsible to keep it burning.
Every morning, wood had to be placed on the altar. The ashes had to be handled. The sacrifice had to be arranged. The fire had to be tended.
This is a picture of daily spiritual faithfulness.
Many Christians want Sunday fire without Monday obedience. They want revival without discipline. They want spiritual warmth without daily wood on the altar.
But fire must be tended.
You cannot neglect prayer all week and expect your heart to burn brightly. You cannot starve yourself of Scripture and expect spiritual strength. You cannot fill your mind with the world and expect your soul to stay aflame for God.
Every day, we must add wood to the fire.
That wood may look like:
- Reading God’s Word
- Prayer
- Worship
- Confession
- Serving others
- Sharing the gospel
- Obeying the Holy Spirit
- Gathering with God’s people
A fire left unattended will eventually become ashes.
Reflection
Ask yourself:
- What am I doing daily to keep the fire burning?
- Have I been spiritually coasting?
- What habits are feeding my fire, and what habits are smothering it?
God has given us what we need, but we must be faithful to tend the flame.
Prayer
Lord, help me not to neglect the fire You have placed in my heart. Teach me daily faithfulness. Give me hunger for Your Word, desire for prayer, and love for worship. Keep me from becoming cold, careless, or distracted. Let the fire never go out. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Action
Create a simple daily “fire plan.” Choose a specific time today and for the rest of the week to read Scripture and pray. Keep it simple, but be consistent.
